Stellaris: The Machine Age (PC) Review (2024)

Stellaris: The Machine Age ventures into uncharted territory, offering a unique experience to players. It invites them to delve into the ins and outs of a mechanized cosmos, a world teeming with artificial intelligence and cybernetic civilizations. As a newcomer to the Stellaris series, I eagerly dived into this latest expansion, which met and exceeded all expectations. However, it’s important to note that there is a learning curve for those new to the 4X strategy game concept.

The key feature of Stellaris: The Machine Age is the introduction of machine empires. Players are immersed in a realm filled with choices and challenges. Whether you’re guiding a society of sentient machines toward galactic dominance or navigating the complex waters of AI diplomacy, each decision carries significant weight and consequences. This strategic depth ensures that every second of gameplay is meaningful, weaving players into a captivating web of strategy and intrigue.

The expansion introduces a wealth of new technologies and mechanics. From crafting synthetic leaders to constructing legions of cutting-edge robotic armies, the possibilities are as boundless as the world of Stellaris itself. Moreover, including fresh events and storylines injects a welcome dose of narrative depth, enriching the gameplay experience with tantalizing lore and unforgettable moments. Like the end-game crisis that has you working with the Synthetic Queen or, on the other hand, being able to work against her, which leads to a huge battle that is a feast for the eyes.

Visually, Stellaris: The Machine Age dazzles with its striking aesthetic. The meticulous attention to detail lavished upon robotic units and space vistas immerses players in a vibrant sci-fi tapestry, evoking a sense of wonder and awe with every passing moment. Complemented by an evocative soundtrack that captures the essence of cosmic exploration, the overall presentation is nothing short of breathtaking. That being said, there is some notable AI work in the game that Paradox Interactive is open about, but hearing the AI voice work and seeing the AI art being so present isn’t great.

Note: Paradox Interactive has reached out with AI clarification.

AI art is not used in the final visuals of the expansion. See the expansion’sSteam page statementfor clarification on AI usage in developing the expansion:

“We employ generative AI technologies during the creation of some assets. Typically, this involves the ideation of content and visual reference material. These elements represent a minor component of the overall development. AI has been used to generate voices for an AI antagonist and a player advisor.”

Nevertheless, Stellaris: The Machine Age is not without its imperfections. Some players may find the learning curve daunting, especially when dealing with the intricacies of managing machine empires. Additionally, while the expansion elevates the mid-to-late game to new heights, it could benefit from additional content focused on the early stages of robotic evolution. This would provide a more balanced gameplay experience across all phases of the galactic odyssey.

There is also no easy way to say this, but there are so many mechanics at play in Stellaris that a lot of knowledge can easily get lost. While the tutorial does an okay job of showing the players how to play, there is just so much thrown at new players that it is incredibly overwhelming, and I found myself needing to play through the tutorial twice to start to really understand how to play the game outside of very early games.

“The expansion introduces a wealth of new technologies and mechanics, from crafting synthetic leaders to constructing legions of cutting-edge robotic armies.”

Stellaris: The Machine Age introduces many diplomatic practices that we are starting that don’t feel too distant and add complexity to interactions between machine empires and their organic counterparts. Negotiating alliances, brokering trade deals, and navigating the delicate balance of power in a galaxy inhabited by both flesh and steel provide players with a nuanced diplomatic landscape to explore. The dynamic nature of these interactions imbues each playthrough with a sense of unpredictability, ensuring that no two games unfold in quite the same manner.

In addition to its substantive gameplay enhancements, Stellaris: The Machine Age offers players a robust suite of customization options to tailor their galactic conquests to their liking. The expanded ship designer allows for unparalleled creativity in crafting fleets of warships, from sleek, nimble frigates to hulking behemoths bristling with weapons. You have a lot of control over how robot civilizations develop. You can change things like their rules, how they’re organized, and how they’re run. You are the boss of these robot societies, deciding how they’ll grow and change over time.

Moreover, the expansion breathes new life into Stellaris’s exploration aspect with the introduction of ancient relics and mysterious anomalies to uncover. Delving into the remnants of long-lost machine civilizations yields valuable insights into their technological prowess and cultural legacy while uncovering enigmatic anomalies that present players with moral questions and philosophical dilemmas that test players and how far they want to push themselves and their crew. These narrative-driven elements add depth and richness to the exploration experience, transforming each journey into a compelling narrative of discovery and revelation.

In conclusion, Stellaris: The Machine Age is a tour de force that redefines the boundaries of the 4X strategy genre. With its rich gameplay, stunning visuals, and wealth of new content, it represents the pinnacle of the Stellaris experience. Whether you’re a veteran admiral or a fledgling explorer, there’s never been a better time to embark on an unforgettable journey through the stars.
